A HAT based large PAH discotic molecule PN8 is developed. The enlarged chromophoric core and doping heteroatoms enable colorimetric and fluorometric sensing of Cu2+ and Zn2+ with highly appreciable optical changes, good selectivity and low detection limit. Moreover, PN8 was demonstrated as an excellent adsorbent to remove Cu2+ and Zn2+ from wastewater.

We report a novel N-heteroheptacenequinone derivative (C6OAHCQ) as a large π-conjugated framework. C6OAHCQ shows good electron-accepting behaviour owing to eight electron-deficient imino-N atoms and two carbonyl moieties and excellent solubility in common organic solvents. When a potential between 0 and -2.20 V is applied, C6OAHCQ is able to accept four electrons, which is more than fullerene C60 (three electrons) could accept in this voltage range. Moreover, a solution of C6OAHCQ and nBu4NPF6 in CH2Cl2 exhibits a clearly reversible brown-to-green colour change, suggesting that C6OAHCQ has potential as an electrochromic material.

New dipolar compounds containing a 5,6-bis-hexyloxy-benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazole entity in the conjugated spacer between the electron donating arylamine and the electron accepting 2-cyanoacrylic acid have been synthesized. These compounds were used as the sensitizers for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells. Compared to the congeners without the hexyloxy chains, the new dyes effectively suppress the dark currents and significantly improve the cell performance. The best conversion efficiency reached ~92% of the N719-based standard DSSC fabricated and measured under similar conditions (AM 1.5 irradiation). The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012.

The condensation of 1,2-bisalkoxy-4,5-diaminobenzene 2a-e derivatives with freshly prepared hexaketocyclohexane give hexakis(alkoxy)diquinoxalino[2,3-a:2′,3′-c]phenazines in good yield. DSC and polarization microscopy showed HATOC6 has both the crystalline (K) to mesophase (M) and the mesophase (M) to isotropic (I) phase transitions. Importantly, the alkoxy substituted compound synthesized showed an M-I transition because of greater stability, whereas the reported alkyl-thiol decomposes after the mesophase.
