Stabilizing influence: When a DNA duplex containing two salicylic aldehyde nucleosides facing each other is treated with ethylenediamine and one equivalent of a Cu2+ or Mn2+ salt, a metal-salen base pair is formed within the DNA. The resulting stabilization of the DNA structure is attributed to the cross-linking of the salicylic aldehyde units with ethylenediamine. (Chemical Equation Presented)
