Preparation of active antiamoebic compounds derived from chloronitrodiphenyls, chloronitrodiphenylmethane and chloronitrobenzophenone e. g. 4,4'-bis(2-diethylaminoethylamino)-3,3'-dinitrodiphenyl (2), 4,4'-bis(3-N-piperidinopropylamino)-3,3'-dinitrodiphenyl (3), 4,4'-bis(3-N-piperidinopropylamino)-3,3'-dinitrodiphenylmethane (4) and 3',4-bis(3-N-piperidinopropylamino)-3,4'-dinitrobenzophenone (5) is described.These compounds display moderate to good antiamoebic activity against Entamoeba histolyca in intestinal and hepatic amoebiasis.Compound 3, which is as active as metronidazole and also found to be non-mutagenic in the Ames' test without microsomal activation, has been studied in detail.However, an unacceptable degree of toxicity in the range-finding experiments precludes further development of the compound.
