Photolysis of 5,3'-dimethyl-2,2'-dinitrodiphenylmethanes (1a-c) in isopropanol affords 2,7-dimethyldibenzodiazepin-11-one-5-oxides (5a-c) as the major products. 5-Methyl-3-(3'-methyl-2'-nitrophenyl)-2,1-benzisoxazoles (2a-c), 2,7-dimethyldibenzodiazepin-11-one (3a-c), 5,3'-dimethyl-2,2'-dinitrobenzophenones (4a-c) and acridones (6a-c) are also formed in the photoreaction. The irradiation of 1 in benzene and acidified ethanolic solution on the other hand yields 4 and 2 respectively as the major products. When the photolysis of 1a-c is carried out intriethylamine, in addition to the products mentioned above, the corresponding 2,7-dimethyldibenzodiazepine (8) is also formed.
