Selective catalytic ligation of [μ-(CF3)2C2]Co2(CO)6 with the ligands dppm [bis(diphenylphosphino)-methane], dppe [bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane], and ttas [bis(o-(dimethylarsino)phenyl)methylarsine] is described. Catalysis was initiated by benzophenone ketyl or a cathode, and the yields of the products are correlated with those from analogous thermal reactions. The catalytic efficiency for the stages of selective substitution was independent of the ligand, but the rate of substitution and the resultant ligand configuration does depend on the bite of the ligand. Products characterized are [μ-(CF3)2C2]Co2(CO) 5(η1-L-L) (L-L = dppm, ttas), {[μ-(CF3)2C2]Co2(CO) 5}2(η1-L-L) (L-L = dppe), [μ-(CF3)2C2]Co2(CO) 4(μ-η2-L-L) (L-L = dppm, dppe), [μ-(CF3)2C2]Co2(CO) 4(η2-L) (L = dppe, ttas), and [μ-(CF3)2C2]Co2(CO) 3(η3-ttas). [μ-(CF3)2C2]-Co2(CO) 4(η2-dppe) crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/n (Z = 4, a = 11.991 (2) A?, b = 14.335 (4) A?, c = 19.612 (6) A?, β = 106.86 (2)°), and its structure was refined to R = 0.0331 and Rw = 0.0340 for 3960 reflections (I > 3σ(I)). [μ-(CF3)2C2]Co2(CO) 4(η2-ttas) was monoclinic, space group P21/c (Z = 4, a = 12.563 (2) A?, b = 15.166 (3) A?, c = 17.995 (7) A?, β = 114.74 (2)°), with refinement to R = 0.0623 and Rw = 0.0654 for 1784 reflections (I > 3σ(I)). The structures of these derivatives are compared to that of the η3-ttas complex. The spectroscopic data show that the polydentate derivatives are stereochemically nonrigid in solution. ETC substitution is used to rapidly incorporate 13CO in these molecules.
