Condensation of isatins and 1-methylisatins with 3-carboxyphenylthiosemicarbazide furnishes 3-(3'-carboxyphenylthiosemicarbazono)-2-indolinones (I) and their 1-methyl analogues (II), respectively.Mannich reaction of I yields 1-substituted-aminomethyl-3-(3'-carboxyphenylsemicarbazono)-2-indolinones (III).Majority of the compounds prepared (I-III) show significant inhibition of ranikhet disease and tobacco mosaic viruses.
