Oligophosphine Ligands, XXXIX. (1S,2S)-trans-Cyclopentane-1,2-diyl-bis(phosphine), C5H8(PH2)2, by Reduction of a Diastereomerically Pure Cyclopentanediyl-bis(dioxaphospholane)

The title compound (S,S)-2, has been obtained by reduction with Li of the cyclopentane-1,2-diyl-bis(1',3',2'-dioxaphospholane)(1S,2S)-trans-C5H82, (S,S)-1, which itself was isolated in diastereomerically pure form (X-ray structure analysis) from the reaction betwen rac,trans-C5H8(PCl2)2 and (2R,3R)-(+)-diisopropyl tartrate.Cleavage of (S,S)-1 with PCl3 yielded an unseparable mixture of (1S,2S)-trans-C5H8(PCl2)2 and (4R,5R)-ClP2. - Keywords: Chiral Bis(phosphine), Reduction of P-O, X-Ray, Mass Spectra, NMR Spectra

Heating of white phosphorus, phosphorus trichloride, and cyclopentene at 220 deg C gives trans-1,2-bis(dichlorophosphino)cyclopentane (1), which with phenylmagnesium bromide gives trans-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)cyclopentane (dpcp) (2); compound (2) forms the adduct Ni(dpcp)Br2*CH2Cl2, which readily crystallises as a conglomerate and the pure enantiomers may be separated by hand allowing resolution of (2), and catalytic hydrogenation of methyl(N-benzoyl)dehydrophenylalanine using resolved (2) and a rhodium catalyst gave a hydrogenated product of 100percent optical purity.
