Alkylidenesulfur tetrafluorides R2C=SF4 exhibit a strong sulfur-carbon bond that can be described as double bond. The existence of an equilibrium between a CS and a CC double bond in the special case of CF3-CH=SF4/CF2=CH-SF5 allows the estimation of the CS double bond energy.A value of about 377 kJ is found as compared with 255 kJ for the average CS single bond energy.

(2,2,2-Trifluoroethylidene)sulfur tetrafluoride, CF3CH=SF4 (9a), is made from HCC-OR (1a,b) and SF5Cl in a multistep preparation. In the last step 9a is formed along with the isomer F2C=CH-SF5 (10a) by LiF elimination from LiCHCF3-SF5 (8a).CF3C(CH3)=SF4 (9c) and F2C=C(CH3)-SF5 (10c) are formed likewise in several steps from CH3CC-OR (1c,d) and SF5Cl.The new alkylidenesulfur tetrafluorides 9a,c are the third and forth members of this class of compounds, and they are especially stable.Their structure is analogous to the structures of H2C=SF4 and CH3CH=SF4.
