25-Methylcholest-7-en-3β-ol, (1; R1 = R2 =H), prepared from 3β-acetoxypregn-7-ene-20-carbaldehyde (2) and 3,3-dimethylbutylmagnesium bromide was converted by a previously reported process into 1α,3β-dihydroxy-25-methylcholesta-5,7-diene (3).Irradiation of (3) gave 1α-hydroxy-25-methyl vitamin D3 (4) which has been biologically evaluated.
