(S)-Dolichols can be prepared from poliprenols extracted from Ginkgo biloba leaves by asymmetric hydrogenation.The dolichols are obtained in high yield and >95percent optical purity.

Both natural (S)-and unnatural (R)-mammalian dolichols were synthesized for the first time from the mixture of novel polyprenols isolated from Ginkgo biloba.
