An equilibrium mixture of carbocations, for which the structure of homoallylic and benzylic ions were proposed on the basis of the NMR spectra, was generated from 5-exo-hydroxy-5-pentafluorophenyl-2,3-tetrafluorobenzobicycloocta-2,7-diene in the mixture SbF5-HSO3F-SO2FCl (-100 deg C).When this mixture was heated above -70 deg C, rearrangement occured with the formation of a homoallylic ion in the form of a derivative of the bicyclooctenyl structure.
