Vernolic acid (I)(12,13-epoxy-cis-9-octadecenoic) undergoes pseudobromination with N,N-dibromobenzenesulphonamide to yield 9-bromo-10,13-epoxy-12-(benzenesulphonamido)octadecanoic acid (II) as the major product, while its chlorohydrin furnishes 9-bromo-12-chloro-10,13-epoxyoctadecanoic acid (IV) as the major product along with 9,10-dibromo-12(13)-chloro-13(12)-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid (V) and an isomeric mixture of 9(10)-bromo-12(13)-chloro-13(12)-hydroxy-10(9)-(benzenesulphonamido)octadecanoic acid (VI) as minor products.Their structures have been established with the help of elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, PMR and mass).
