Pronounced Aldehydic Character of N-Formylindoles: Part III - Preparation, PMR and Mass Spectrometric Study of Their Oximes

The N-formylindoles (1a-g) show pronounced aldehydic character as evidenced by the formation of their oximes (2a-g and 2c').However, some of the N-formylindoles (bearing phenyl groups at both the 2- and 3-positions) do not form 4-nitro- or 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone derivatives, probably due to steric hindrance.
