General Description

PENICILLINASE, also known as beta-lactamase, is an enzyme produced by some bacteria that confers resistance to penicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics. It works by breaking the beta-lactam ring present in the antibiotic molecule, rendering it ineffective. This mechanism allows bacteria to survive and multiply in the presence of penicillin, making them resistant to the antibiotic's effects. Penicillinase is a major contributor to antibiotic resistance and poses a significant challenge in the treatment of bacterial infections. Efforts to combat this resistance include the development of new antibiotics and the use of beta-lactamase inhibitors to prevent the action of penicillinase.
