Uses

Used in Research:
EC 3.1.1.1 is used as a research tool for protein engineering and studying the kinetic resolution of acetates of arylaliphatic tertiary alcohols. It is expressed in E. coli and is available as a recombinant product with a high specific activity (≥10 U/mg).
Used in Medical Applications:
Esterase isoenzymes, such as Esterase Isoenzyme 1 from porcine liver, are used to identify the monocytic element in normal and leukemic cells. They are also used for the biochemical characterization of different hematopoietic cell lineages and stages of differentiation when studying leukemias and lymphomas.
Used in Industrial Applications:
EC 3.1.1.1 is used in the synthesis of biodiesel and biopolymers, as well as in the production of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and flavor compounds. Its ability to catalyze the hydrolysis of esters makes it a valuable enzyme for various industrial processes.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Esterase enzyme has broad substrate specificity. Esterase from rabbit liver has been used to investigate the toxic effect of carbamate insecticides. Esterase from rabbit liver has also been used for the hydrolysis of simvastatin.
