(Chemical Equation Presented) Excellent activator: Living cis-1,4-polymerization and copolymerization of isoprene (IP) and butadiene (BD) are achieved for the first time in the presence of an in situ formed cationic alkyl yttrium species (see scheme). A related cationic alkyl lutetium complex, which provides a well-defined structural model for the true catalytically active species, is isolated and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography.
