5,6-Benzo-4-(p-bromobenzoyl)-3,4-dihydrocoumarin (1) has been prepared by Pechmann condensation of β-naphthol with p-bromobenzoylacrylic acid.Compound 1 reacts with Grignard reagents to yield 5,6-benzo-4-(diaryl or arylalkyl)hydroxymethyl-3,4-dihydrocoumarins 2, and reacts with aldehydes or acrylonitrile to afford the corresponding 3-arylidine or 3-α-propanamidyl-3,4-dihydrocoumarins 3 or 4, respectively.Bromination of 1 yields, 3,4-dibromocoumarin 5 and 3-bromocoumarin derivatives 6.
