Together with 2',5-di-O-galloylhamamelose (I), which had previously been designated as hamamelitannin, five new galloylhamameloses (II-VI) were isolated from the bark of Castanea crenata L. (Fagaceae).On the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence, their structures were characterized as 2',3,5,tri-O-galloyl- (II), 5-O-galloyl- (III), 1,2'-di-O-galloyl-(IV), 1,2',5-tri-O-galloyl-(V) and 1,2',3,5-tetra-O-galloyl-D-hamamelofuranose (VI).In addition, the occurance of two galloylhamameloses (I and II) in the underground part of Sanguisorba officinalis L.
