It is a colorless to pale yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in water, ethanol, and ether. Benzenemethanethiol, 4-amino- is an important intermediate in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and dyes. It is used in the production of sulfonamide drugs, such as sulfamethoxazole, and in the synthesis of dyes like disperse yellow 3. Due to its reactivity, it is also used as a reducing agent and a protecting group in organic synthesis.
