The new method involves epoxidation of C-cinnamylated polyphenols, followed by hetero-cyclisation in the presence of H2SO4 - CH3COOH medium and final deacetylation.Thus, 5-C-cinnamylresacetophenone (II) has been converted into 6-acetyl-7-hydroxy-2,3-trans-flavan-3-ol (V) through epoxide (III) and the 3-O-acetyl derivative (IV).
