ortho-Carboxy benzene azo dimethyl aniline, C6H4-(COOH)-N=N-C6H4-N(CH3)2 (LH) (an indicator with a pH range 4.5-6.5) possesses a chelating behaviour. Its chelates with a number of divalent metal ions, Mg(II), Ca(II), Sr(II), Ba(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Co(II), of the type ML2 have been isolated and characterised on the basis of their elemental analyses, ir and visible spectra, and magnetic and molar conductance studies. All the chelates are tetrahedral, except NiL2 and CuL2 which are square planar.Only CuL2 and CoL2 are paramagnetic, the others are diamagnetic. They all are non-electrolytic.
