The methyl(ethylene)platinum(II) complex [Pt2(μ-Cl)2Me2(C2H 4)2] and methylcarbonylplatinum(II) complex [Pt2(μ-Cl)2Me2 (CO)2] have been prepared and characterized. Reactions of [Pt2(μ-Cl)2Me2(C2H 4)2] with alkenes or alkynes (un) generally give the products of substitution [Pt2(μ-Cl)2Me2(un)2], but CF3C≡CCF3 gives insertion into the PtMe bond. Reaction of [Pt2Me4(μ-SMe2)2] with ethylene yields the dimethyl-(ethylene)platinum(II) complex cis-[PtMe2(SMe2)(C2H4)] and with carbon monoxide cis-[PtMe2(SMe2)(CO] is formed. Oxidative addition of iodomethane to cis-[PtMe2(CO)(SMe2)] produces a rare example of a platinum(IV) carbonyl complex fac-[PtIMe3(SMe2)(CO)].
