Carboxyhemoglobin is a compound formed when carbon monoxide (CO) binds to hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body. This binding reduces the hemoglobin's ability to carry oxygen, leading to a condition called carboxyhemoglobinemia. The affinity of hemoglobin for carbon monoxide is approximately 200 times greater than its affinity for oxygen, making it difficult for the body to release the carbon monoxide and resume normal oxygen transport. Prolonged exposure to high levels of carbon monoxide can result in severe health issues, including hypoxia, organ damage, and even death. The primary source of carbon monoxide exposure is from inhaling tobacco smoke or being in environments with inadequate ventilation, such as in enclosed spaces with combustion appliances.
