It is a colorless, crystalline solid that is soluble in water and various organic solvents. (4-methyl-1,3-phenylene)dimethanol is characterized by a benzene ring with a methyl group at the 4-position and two hydroxyl groups attached to the 1 and 3 positions, respectively. The dimethanol part of the name refers to the two methanol (CH3OH) groups attached to the hydroxyl groups. (4-methyl-1,3-phenylene)dimethanol is used as a monomer in the production of polycarbonates and other polymers, and it is also employed as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
