Description
Poly(styrenesulfonic acid sodium salt), also known as sodium polystyrene sulfonate, is a synthetic, water-soluble polymer with a high charge density. It is a solid, anionic polymer that exhibits strong electrostatic interactions with cations. The polymer is available under various brand names, including Kayexalate, Kalexate, Kionex, and SPS, as well as non-branded generics. Sodium polystyrene sulfonate can be administered as an oral suspension or in an enema.
Uses
Used in Analytical Applications:
Poly(styrenesulfonic acid sodium salt) is used as an analytical size standard for comparing poly(styrenesulfonate) (NaPSS) chain ordering between two solid interfaces and in bulk using colloidal probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS).
Used in Biohybrid Materials:
Poly(styrenesulfonic acid sodium salt) is used in the synthesis of biohybrid materials of a stimulus-responsive hydrogel based on ligand-responsive DNA-protein interactions.
Used in Manufacturing Low-Humidity Sensors:
Poly(styrenesulfonic acid sodium salt) can be used in the manufacture of low-humidity sensors, made by layer-by-layer self-assembly of poly(styrenesulfonic acid sodium salt) and poly(allyamine hydrochloride) into multilayer thin films on a gold electrode of quartz crystal microbalance.
Clinical Use
Sodium polystyrene sulfonate was approved for medical use in the United States in 1958.Sodium polystyrene sulfonate is used to treat hyperkalemia (increased amounts of potassium in the body). Sodium polystyrene sulfonate is in a class of medications called potassium-removing agents. It works by removing excess potassium from the body.
Side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.Stop using sodium polystyrene sulfonate and call your doctor at once if you have:stomach pain, rectal pain;severe constipation, severe stomach pain, bloating;fever, chills, vomiting;confusion, thinking problems, feeling irritable;low potassium --leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, increased thirst or urination, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness or limp feeling;low calcium levels --muscle spasms or contractions, numbness or tingly feeling (around your mouth, or in your fingers and toes); orsigns of stomach bleeding --bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.Common side effects may include:nausea, vomiting;diarrhea, constipation; orloss of appetite.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 9080-79-9 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 9,0,8 and 0 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 7 and 9 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 9080-79:
(6*9)+(5*0)+(4*8)+(3*0)+(2*7)+(1*9)=109
109 % 10 = 9
So 9080-79-9 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
