N-(Cyanovinyl)amidines (3a-k), presumed intermediates in the synthesis of pyrimidines from cyanoketene S,N-acetals and amidines, have been synthesized and characterized.I.r. and 1H n.m.r. studies indicate that these vinylamidines exist, preferentially, in the intramolecularly hydrogen bonded E form (9a).
HETEROCYCLIZATION OF FUNCTIONALIZED KETENE ACETALS: SYNTHESIS OF PYRIMIDINES VIA VINYLAMIDINE INTERMEDIATES

, p. 1291 - 1292 (2007/10/02)
Stable N-(carbethoxycyanovinyl)amidines have been isolated from the reaction of benzamidine with carbethoxycyanoketene S,N-acetals and have been found to cyclize to 4-chloro-, 4-amino- and 4-hydroxypyrimidines depending upon the cyclizing agent employed.
