Treatment of the (μ3-halomethylidyne)tricobalt cluster compound (μ3-X-C)Co3(CO)6L3 with Na[Ru(η-C5H5)(CO)2] produces the heptanuclear (μ5-C)(η-C5H5)2Ru 2-Co4Hg(CO)13 2 [X = Br; L3 = (CO)3] and tetranuclear carbide cluster compound (η-C5H5)(CO)2Ru(μ4-C)Co 3-(CO)6(tdpm) 4 [X = Cl; L3 = CH(PPh2)3 (tdpm)], via substitution of μ3-X-C; the latter complex 4 is the first example of a structurally characterized tetrahedral sp3 carbide cluster compound.

Tris(diphenylphosphino)methane (TPM) is shown to exhibit a variety of coordination modes. In and it is monodentate while in and cis-, two of the three phosphorus atoms chelate to the metal. The uncoordinated arms of TPM in the mono- and bidentate complexes can coordinate other metals to give the homo- and heterobimetallic complexes , and trans-.In the last, an unusual virtually-coupled 31P NMR spectrum is seen. With (R=H, Cl) under mild conditions is formed in the ligand functions in a bidentate, bridging fashion while under more strenuous conditions the ligand-capped clusters form.
