2-(4-R-Phenylazo)-4,5-diphenylimidazole (R = H, PAI; = OH, HPAI; = COOH, CPAI) acts as a bidentate chelating ligand to form stable complexes with Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) ions.It is concluded that the ligands are bonded to the metal ion through the α-nitrogen atom of the aryl azo group and N-3 of the imidazole ring.The apparent formation constants of the complexes in solution have been determined.
