The reactions of ethyl 3-carbethoxyamino-2-benzofurancarboxylate (II) with hydrazine hydrate, aliphatic and aromatic amines have been investigated. 3-Carbethoxyamino-2-benzofurancarbonyl azide (VII), prepared from 3-carbethoxyamino-2-benzofurancarboxyhydrazide (III), undergoes Curtius rearrangement in the presence of alcohols to afford the carbamates (VIII).Rearrangement of VII in the presence of aromatic amines gives ethyl 2-arylureido-3-benzofurancarbamates (IX).
