The invention relates to an indene thiophthene donor based D-A-pi-A type dye and application thereof. Indene thiophthene serves as a donor unit which is chemically modified (namely one end of the donor unit is connected with electron donating groups to serve as a donor while the other end of the donor unit is connected with different conjugation units and electron withdrawing groups to realize adsorption on TiO2) to obtain the indene thiophthene donor based D-A-pi-A type dye. According to experiments, the indene thiophthene donor based D-A-pi-A type dye has unique photoelectrochemical properties and can be used as a photosensitization agent for dye-sensitized solar cells. In addition, the indene thiophthene donor based D-A-pi-A type dye has advantages of easiness in preparation, low cost and the like and has a commercial application prospect.
