Treatment of oxocyclobutenyl complexes of molybdenum and tungsten, 1a-c, with titanacyclobutane 2, followed by tetrafluoroboric acid etherate, affords cationic cyclobutadiene complexes 4, via the intermediacy of methylenecyclobutenyl compounds 3. Reaction of cationic 4a with chloride yields the neutral derivative 5, which has been characterized crystallographically.
