A new general approach towards the synthesis of dl-N-aryltryptophans (4) has been developed by the reaction of indole (1) with N-aryl-2-cyanoaziridinium fluoroborates followed by subsequent hydrolysis of the resulting α-arylamino-β-indolylpropanenitriles (3) with barium hydroxide.
