Reaction of 1,7-dimethoxynaphthalene (Ia) with acrylonitrile in the presence of anhyd.AlCl3 affords directly a ketone identified as 1,2-dihydro-5,7-dimethoxybenzinden-3(H)-one (IIa), and not the phenalanone as reported earlier .Compound IIa can be synthesised in a better yield by the condensation of Ia with acrylic acid in the presence of PPA.With substituted acrylic acids the corresponding benzindan-1(H)-ones (III) are obtained.Similar reactions of 1,7-diethoxynaphthalene (Ib) with acrylonitriles and acrylic acids give the corresponding benzindanones (IV and V).Structures of all compounds have been established on the basis of their spectral and analytical data.
