Interaction of the title compound (I) with alkyl and arylamines gives open chain compounds, 1-(β-alkyl/arylaminoethyl)-3-cyano-6-hydroxy-4-methylpyrid-2(1H)-ones (II).The compounds (II) derived from primary amines yield 1-alkyl/aryl-6-cyano-2,3-dihydro-7-methylimidazopyrid-5(H)-ones (VII, X) on cyclodehydration.Tertiary amines such as triethylamine and pyridine give the dipolar betaine salts (IIIb) and (IV) respectively.Ethylenediamine and piperazine react with two mol of I in the presence of triethylamine to give the bispyridones (V and VI).
