Flavylium Salts: A Blooming Core for Bioinspired Ionic Liquid Crystals
Forschner, Robert,Knelles, Jakob,Bader, Korinna,Müller, Carsten,Frey, Wolfgang,K?hn, Andreas,Molard, Yann,Giesselmann, Frank,Laschat, Sabine
supporting information, p. 12966 - 12980 (2019/11/05)
Thermotropic ionic liquid crystals based on the flavylium scaffold have been synthesized and studied for their structure-properties relationship for the first time. The mesogens were probed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Low numbers of alkoxy side chains resulted in smectic (SmA) and lamello-columnar (LamCol) phases, whereas higher substituted flavylium salts showed Colro as well as ordered and disordered columnar (Colho, Colhd) mesophases. Mesophase width ranged from 13 K to 220 K, giving access to room temperature liquid crystals. The optical properties of the synthesized compounds were probed towards absorption and emission properties. Strong absorption with maxima between 444 and 507 nm was observed, and some chromophores were highly emissive with quantum yields up to 99 %. Ultimately, mesogenic and dye properties were examined by temperature-dependent emissive experiments in the solid state.

Synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of a new homologous series of 4,5-disubstituted 2H-[1,2,3]-triazoles via azide-chalcone oxidative cycloaddition reaction
Sowmya,Rai, K. M. Lokanatha
, p. 764 - 768 (2017/07/07)
A new homologous series of 4,5-disubstituted 2H-[1,2,3]-triazole derivatives were synthesized from chalcones and sodium azide via oxidative cycloaddition reaction; CuI was used as catalyst. Flexibility in the synthesized molecules was provided by attaching straight alkoxy chains. The synthesized compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, and 1HNMRand 13CNMRand LC-MS spectroscopies . The stability and range of the mesophases increased with the length of the chain on the triazoles. The melting point, transition temperatures, and enantiotropic liquid crystal morphologies were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM) equipped with a hot stage. Synthesis and characterization of new homologous series of unsymmetrical liquid crystalline compounds based on chalcones and 3, 5-disubstituted isoxazoles
Sowmya,Lokanatha Rai
, p. 67 - 73 (2017/01/24)
Two homologous series of unsymmetrical alkylated chalcones and 3,5-diaryl isoxazoles, consisting of 20 members, with various n-alkyl bromides (n=2?7, 10, 12, 14, 16) have been synthesized and studied for their liquid crystalline property. Simple strategy was employed to achieve the target materials. Flexibility in the synthesized molecules is provided by attaching straight alkoxy chains, where one terminal group is fixed and other terminal group is varied. The synthesized compounds were characterized on the basis of Mass, IR and NMR spectroscopy. The stability and the range of the mesophases increased with the length of the chain on the isoxazoles. The melting point, transition temperatures and enantiotropic liquid crystal morphologies were determined by polarizing optical microscopy (POM) in conjunction with a hot stage and by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Abstract 4-nitrodiphenylacrylonitrile and diphenylacrylonitrile derivatives consisting of methoxy group and alkoxy chain with different lengths were synthesized and their gelation abilities were investigated. It was found that compounds with longer alkoxy
Dynamic amphiphile libraries to screen for the "fragrant" delivery of siRNA into HeLa cells and human primary fibroblasts

Dynamic amphiphiles are amphiphiles with dynamic covalent bridges between their hydrophilic heads and their hydrophobic tails. Their usefulness to activate ion transporters, for odorant release, and for differential sensing of odorants and perfumes, has been demonstrated recently. Here, we report that the same "fragrant" dynamic amphiphiles are ideal to screen for new siRNA transfection agents. The advantages of this approach include rapid access to fairly large libraries of complex structures, and possible transformation en route to assist uptake and minimize toxicity. We report single-component systems that exceed the best commercially available multicomponent cocktails with regard to both efficiency and velocity of EGFP knockdown in HeLa cells. In human primary fibroblasts, siRNA-mediated enzyme knockdown nearly doubled from >30% for Lipofectamine to >60% for our best hit. The identified structures were predictable neither from literature nor from results in fluorogenic vesicles and thus support the importance of conceptually innovative screening approaches.
Peripherally fused porphyrins via the Scholl reaction: Synthesis, self-assembly, and mesomorphism

Oxidative coupling of activated aryl groups attached to β-positions of the porphyrin ring provides convenient access to derivatives containing peripherally fused phenanthrene and benzo[g]chrysene units. Tetra(benzochryseno) porphyrin, reported here for the first time, contains a nonplanar, sterically locked π system and shows very intense electronic absorptions in the Q range of the electronic spectrum. Tetraphenanthroporphyrins show a tendency to aggregate in solution. In one case, a discrete dimer is formed, whose structure was investigated spectroscopically and theoretically. Derivatives bearing long alkyl chains are mesomorphic and exhibit columnar phases (tetraphenanthroporphyrins) and a monoclinic 3D phase (tetrabenzochrysenoporphyrin). The symmetry of column packing in the columnar phases is dependent on the number of alkyl chains per molecule. X-ray diffraction measurements show that, in spite of their nonplanarity, the aromatic cores in the mesophases are tightly stacked within the column. The corresponding stacking patterns were derived from the structure of the dimer, on the basis of geometrical analysis and molecular modeling.

(E,E)-3,6-Bis(styryl)pyridazines (3a-t) bearing 2, 4 or 6 alkoxy chains were prepared by applying the Siegrist reaction of 3,6-dimethylpyridazine (13) and the corresponding azomethines 10a-t. The transversal dipole moment of these calamitic compounds effe
