The radical reaction of ethylene bis(2-trifluoromethylacrylate) [CH 2=C(CF3)COOCH2CH2OCOC(CF 3)=CH2] (EBFA) was investigated to afford a polymer with the molecular weights of as high as 5.6 × 104 in the presenceof large amount of DOX (1,4-dioxane). EBFA was synthesized by adding 0.18 mol of 2-trifluoromethylacryloyl chloride dropwise to dichloromethane solution of 0.081 mol of ethylene glycol and 0.18 mol of triethylamine at 0°C followed by stirring at room temperature for 3 hours. Radical polymerization of EBFA in DOX was carried out under the condition. Polymer was isolated by reprecipitation in hexane. 1H NMR of the polymer obtained by the base-catalyzed hydrolysis of the polymer produced by the reaction of EBFA with DOX showed the decrease of the peaks assigned to -CH2-CH-O and -CH 2-CH(CF3) and to -CH2-CH2- respectively.
