Vilsmeier-Haack reaction on 3-methyl-5-pyrazolone affords the trialdehyde (III) which reacts with arylamines in situ to give the schiff bases (VII) of the 5-aryl-3-chloro-7-formyl-5H-pyrazolopyridine derivatives (VIII).Reaction of III with ammonium chloride, on the other hand, furnishes 3-chloro-7-formyl-1H-pyrazolopyridine (IV).
