Nitrosochlorination of methyl 10,11-epoxyundecanoate (I) and methyl 9,10-epoxyoctadecanoate (IV) yields the respective chloronitrites (II and V) and chlorohydrins (III and VI).However, methyl 12,13-epoxyoctadec-cis-9-enoate (VII; methyl vernolate) on similar treatment for 30 min yields only the double bond addition products (VIII) and (IX) while treatment for a longer period (1h) involves addition as well as cleavage reactions to give three products (X, XI and XII).Structures of all the reaction products have been established on the basis of chemical and spectral evidences.
