The carboxylate A-frame complexes [Rh2(μ-O2CR1)(CO) 2(μ-dppm)2]ClO4 (R1 = CH3, CF3) react with terminal acetylenes, RC2H (R = H, Ph, t-Bu (R1 = CF3 only)), to give the μ-η2-acetylide complexes [Rh2(μ-η2-C2R)(CO) 2(μ-dppm)2]ClO4 in which the acetylide ligand is fluxional, exhibiting an oscillatory type motion. The acetylide groups in these complexes are susceptible to nucleophilic attack by H- and PR3 to give, in the case of H-, unstable bridging vinylidene complexes [Rh2(μ-C= CHR)(CO)2(μ-dppm)2]. In solution, the tert-butylvinylidene complex undergoes an unprecedented reoxidation to the parent acetylide complex.
