3-Alkylthio-4,6-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzenediols have been synthesized by addition of thiols to 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzenediol. Their antiradical and and antioxidant activities were estimated using the model of γ-irradiation-initiated oxidation of hexane. The antiradical activity of 4,6-di-tert-butyl-7-hydroxy-1,3-benzoxathiole-2-thione, which is an ortho analog of tocopherol with a five-membered ring, is 7 times higher than that of the six-membered analog, 5,7-di-tert-butyl-8-hydroxy-2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzooxatiin-2-one.
