Title compounds have been first synthesized.The effects of strain due to the cyclobutene annelation are observed in the 13C NMR chemical shifts, tautomeric equilibrium, reduction potentials, and Diels-Alder reactions with dienes; thermolytic Diels-Alder reactions with dienophiles give novel polycyclic hydroxyquinones.
