Synthesis and Structural Studies on Mercury(II) Chloride Complexes of N,N'-(Substituted)formamidino-N''-(substituted)-carbamides and -thiocarbamides

Mercury(II) chloride reacts with N,N'-diarylsubstituted-formamidino-N''-substitutedcarbamides (DSFSC), -thiocarbamides (DSFSTC), and N-benzoylformamidino-N'substitutedcarbamides (BSFSC) and -thiocarbamides (BSFSTC) forming complexes of the general formula Cl2 (R = phenyl, o-tolyl and p-tolyl; Ar = benzoyl; X = S, O) and Cl2 (R = phenyl, o-tolyl, p-tolyl; Ph = phenyl; X = S, O).The complexes have been characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility, infrared and ultra violet spectroscopy.The ligands when oxidized with iodine undergo ring closure to related 3,5-diarylamino-1,2,4-thiadiazolidines and 3,5-diarylamino-1,2,4-diazolidines while the complexes are not susceptible to oxidation which confirms that the bonding in complexes is through sulphur and oxygen of the ligands.Tetrahedral structures have been proposed for the complexes.
