The structure of the two saponins anchusoside-8 (1) and -9 (2) of Anchusa officinalis L. has been elucidated as 3-O-(β-D-xylopyranosyl)-21-O-(β-sophorosyl)-2α,3β,21β,23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (1) and 21-O-(β-sophorosyl)-2α,3β,21β,23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (2) by MS, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and by chemical derivatisation.
