Indole or its dimer (I) on reaction with excess phosgene below 20 deg C gives 2,3-dihydro-2,3'-biindole)-1-carbonyl chloride (II).The latter compound reacts with a variety of reagents to give 1-substituted 2,3-dihydro-2,3'-biindoles (III-XIII).Structure assignment of all the products are based on elemental analyses and spectral (IR, PMR, mass) data.
