Addition of Chlorosulphonyl Isocyanate to Tetraphenylcyclopentadienone

Chlorosulphonyl isocyanate (CSI) undergoes (2+2) cycloaddition to tetraphenylcyclopentadienone to give the stable sulphonamide (4).However (4+2) addition, by carrying out the reaction either in the presence of aluminium chloride or by the thermolysis of the 2+2 adduct (4), affords the sulphonamide (6).
