(Figure Presented) Completely armless: The efficient synthesis of two sterically confined [2]rotaxanes has shown that oligoethylene glycol arms are not requisites for a clipping reaction to form π-donor/acceptor [2]rotaxanes (see scheme). The rigid nature of the [2]rotaxanes forces the tetracationic cyclophane to encapsulate the initially π-electron-rich station, regardless of its oxidation state, thus generating tunable properties and enhanced stabilities.
