There has been an increasing interest in chemistry involving nitrogen oxyanions, largely due to the environmental hazards associated with increased concentrations of these anions leading to eutrophication and aquatic dead zones . Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a suite of MNOx complexes (M = Co, Zn: x = 2, 3). Reductive deoxygenation of cobalt bis(nitrite) complexes with bis(boryl)pyrazine is faster for cobalt than previously reported nickel, and pendant O-bound nitrito ligand is still readily deoxygenated, despite potential implication of an isonitrosyl primary product. Deoxygenation of zinc oxyanion complexes is also facile, despite zinc being unable to stabilize a nitrosyl ligand, with liberation of nitric oxide and nitrous oxide, indicating N-N bond formation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is effective for discriminating the types of nitrogen in these molecules. ESI mass spectrometry of a suite of M(NOx)y (x = 2, 3 and y = 1, 2) shows that the primary form of ionization is loss of an oxyanion ligand, which can be alleviated via the addition of tetrabutylammonium (TBA) as a nonintuitive cation pair for the neutral oxyanion complexes. We have shown these complexes to be subject to deoxygenation, and there is evidence for nitrogen oxyanion reduction in several cases in the ESI plume. The attractive force between cation and neutral is explored experimentally and computationally and attributed to hydrogen bonding of the nitrogen oxyanion ligands with ammonium α-CH2 protons. One example of ESI-induced reductive dimerization is mimicked by bulk solution synthesis, and that product is characterized by X-ray diffraction to contain two Co(NO)2+ groups linked by a highly conjugated diazapolyene.

Preliminary results on the preparation of nickel(II) and cobalt(II) complexes containing α-diimine ligands using a mechanochemical approach are presented. The solvent-free reaction of [NiBr2(DME)] (DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane) with the appropriate α-diimine ligand led to the formation of the expected Ni(II) complexes in very short reaction times and with quantitative yields. The same compounds were also successfully synthesised when NiBr2 was employed. This methodology was extended to the preparation of [Co(α-diimine)Cl2] complexes through the reaction of CoCl2 with different α-diimine ligands. These compounds were characterised by XRPD and SCXRD, when possible. The results obtained confirm that mechanochemistry has an enormous potential and that is an effective technique for the synthesis of coordination and organometallic compounds.

A series of cobalt(II) complexes bearing α-diimine ligands were synthesized and characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis. These complexes had the general formulas [ArN=C(Me)-(Me)C=NAr]CoCl2 (Ar = C6H5, 3a; 4-M

Several cobalt(II), nickel(II), and zinc(II) complexes with a series of ligands of the 1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene type bearing aryl (2,6-di-iso- propylphenyl, mesityl) and alkyl (tert-butyl, iso-propyl) substituents at the nitrogen atoms are synthesized. The obtained complexes are characterized by X-ray structure analysis, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis.

Cobalt compounds of the general formula [CoX2(α-diimine)], where X = Cl or I and the α-diimines are 1,4-diaryl-2,3-dimethyl-1,4- diaza-1,3-butadiene (Ar-DAB) and bis(aryl)-acenaphthenequinonediimine (Ar-BIAN) were synthesized by the direct reaction of the anhydrous cobalt salts CoCl 2 or CoI2 and the corresponding α-diimine ligand in dried CH2Cl2. The synthesized compounds are [Co(Ph-DAB)Cl2] (1a), [Co(o,o′,p-Me3C 6H2-DAB)Cl2] (1b), and [Co(o,o′-iPr 2C6H3-DAB)Cl2] (1c) with the ligands Ar-DAB, and also [Co(o,o′,p-Me3C6H 2-BIAN)I2] (2′b) with the ligand Ar-BIAN. The crystal structures of all the compounds were solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all cases the cobalt atom is in a distorted tetrahedron, which is built up of two halide atoms and two nitrogen atoms of the α-diimine ligand. X-band EPR measurements of polycrystalline samples performed on compounds 1b, 1c, and 2′b indicate a high-spin CoII ion (S = 3/2) in an axially distorted environment. Single-crystal EPR experiments on compounds 1b and 1c allowed us to evaluate the orientation of the g tensor in the molecular frame. Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 2006.
