Novel polycatenar liquid crystals containing two 1,3,4-thiadiazole rings interconnected by an azobenzene central linkage have been synthesized and investigated by polarizing microscopy, DSC, X-ray scattering, SEM, UV-vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements. These compounds can self-assemble into SmC, Colhex/p6mm and CubI/Pm3n liquid crystalline phases in the bulk states and form multistimuli responsive organogels in organic solvents. They have reversible photoresponsive properties in solution, liquid crystalline states and gel states. A side-chain polymer POXD and the corresponding monomer MOXD based on discotic 1,3,4-oxadiazole have been synthesized and characterized. Both POXD and MOXD exhibit liquid crystalline behaviors at room temperature with excellent thermal stability, while the mesomorphic temperature range of POXD is much wider than that of MOXD. In addition, they are photoluminescent in solution, in the solid state and in liquid crystalline phases. Notably, the fluorescent intensity of POXD is almost 12 times that of MOXD in both the solid state and liquid crystalline phases.

A new class of polycatenars, where the central benzene ring is connected to two arms derived from substituted 1,3,4-thiadiazoles at the 1,3- and 1,4-positions, was synthesized and characterized. These thiadiazole-based molecules are promising as they stabilize columnar phases over a wide temperature range, in comparison to their oxadiazole analogues. The para-substituted polycatenars exhibited a columnar hexagonal and/or a columnar oblique phase, while the meta-substituted polycatenars exhibited solely a columnar oblique phase. The para-substituted polycatenars exhibited green emission, while the meta-substituted polycatenars exhibited blue emission in solution and film states. Stabilization of a broad range columnar phase and luminescence in the solid state make these new compounds promising from the viewpoint of applications in emissive displays. The self-assembly and luminescence of these regioisomers was greatly influenced by the molecular structure.

This paper describes the self-assembling property of three series of p-phenyleneethynylene based comb-like oligomers, which carry multiple peripheral side chains of different polarity. The new oligomers are prepared readily through the formation of the hydrazone bonds from the corresponding aldehyde and gallic acid-derived benzohydrazides. In polar solvents such as methanol and ethanol, the oligomers that bear n-decyl or 2-(2-(dioctylamino)-2-oxoethyl- amino)-2-oxoethoxyl unit (DOAOE) segments as the side chains are revealed to form vesicular structures, while the oligomers carrying hydrophilic oligo(ethyleneglycol) side chains do not. The structures of the vesicles are evidenced by SEM, AFM, TEM, and dye-encapsulation experiments. UV-vis absorption spectroscopic experiments suggest that the vesicles are generated through the stacking of the conjugated backbones, which is promoted by the solvophobic interaction of the peripheral side chains.
