The anionic clusters [Fe2(CO)8]2-, [Fe4(CO)13]2-, [Ru4(CO)13]2-, and [Fe3W(CO)14]2- react rapidly with 1 equiv of Co2(CO)8 to produce the metal-substituted clusters [FeCo(CO)8]-, [Fe3Co(CO)13]-, [Ru3Co(CO)13]-, and [Fe3Co(CO)13]-, respectively. Similarly [Fe3(CO)11]2- with [Mn(CO)5(CH3CN)]+ yields [Fe2Mn(CO)12]-. Radical spin traps implicate a radical chain reaction with Co2(CO)8. The crystal structure of one of these products [N(PPh3)2][Fe3Co(CO)13] was determined. The metal framework is pseudotetrahedral. Crystal data for [PPN][Fe3Co(CO)13]: triclinic, space group P1, a = 15.255 (5) ?, b = 18.750 (6) ?, c = 9.266 (2) A, α = 79.20 (2)°, β = 86.27 (2)°, γ = 109.48 (2)°, and Z = 2.
