Electrochemical reduction of cis- t2-6-MeC6H2; (1c), R= 2,4,6-But3C6H2> produced (2) or (4) depending on the charge consumed and reduction potential.Potentiostatic reduction of (1b) gave 2> (3b) via a two electron transfer process. (2) was formed by the chemical reaction of cis- with zero-valent complexes (3) or (4) which were obtained by the above electrochemical process. The structure of compound (2) consists of two perpendicular Pt(RNC)2 planes joined by a Pt-Pt bond; extended Hueckel molecular orbital calculations on indicate that the perpendicular geometry is more stable than the planar one.Reaction of binuclear complexes wit isocyanide in the presence of or NaClO4 gave 2 (8) (X= PF6 or ClO4).In the electronic spectra of the binuclear complexes(2) and (8) the absorption near 320 nm is assigned to a ?-?* excitation.

The potentiostatic reduction of cis-PtCl2(RNC)2 (3a: R = 2,4-t-Bu2-6-MeC6H2; 3b: R = 2,4,6-t-Bu3C6H2; 3c: R = 2,6-Me2C6H3) were carried out on a mercury pool electrode in CH3CN.The one-electron reduction (96.5 kC/mol) of 3a and 3b gave 2 (4a and 4b).An X-ray analysis of 4a showed that the two PtCl(RNC)2 planes jointed by a Pt-Pt bond were perpendicular.The two-electron reductions (2x96.5 kC/mol) of 3a and 3b gave Hg2 and Pt3(RNC)6, respectively.Electrolysis of 3c gave only Hg2.
